RUGBY South Africa's national
sport was introduced by British settlers in the early 1800s,
and has grown to the point where SA's national team, the Springboks,
is regarded as one of the top Rugby teams in the world.
The game is played at all levels, from primary school to
provincial level, and rivalry is fierce. Schools are particularly
strong and well developed, and every year high schools compete
nationally to earn the title as best in the country.
Senior rugby is also well developed and organised. Clubs
with excellent grounds and facilities exist in nearly every
town and city, and clubs also play a national tournament to
determine the National Club champions. The clubs feed the
Provincial teams with high-quality talent, at the pinnacle
of which are the four South African teams who play Super 12
series against similar teams from New Zealand and Australia.
A rugby tour can be organised at any level, anywhere in the
country, and is sure to be highly competitive with players
who are noted for being as friendly off the field as they
are tough on it.
