SOCCER
By far the most popular sport in South Africa in terms of
multiracial support, football in South Africa has strong amateur
and professional structures. Some of the larger cities have
a number of professional teams who draw their talent from
a multitude of amateur teams.
Professional South African players have been snapped up by
major international clubs, and have played for such illustrious
teams as Manchester United, Leeds United and Liverpool. Leading
professional clubs from around the world tour to South Africa
for out-of-season practices and friendly matches. At amateur
level, soccer has a large and enthusiastic following at every
level.
Most cities have well established clubs with top facilities,
while rural areas may have poorer facilities, but the players
make up for it with sheer exhilarated excitement. There is
also a well established women's soccer league with provincial
teams and even a national women's team.
