Police dance before battle

The
2007 International Police Cricket Festival got off to an
interesting start after Bermuda the last of the four visiting
teams arrived in Cape Town South Africa
late Friday evening.
On
Saturday following the officials briefing all the teams
including hosts South Africa gathered at Moyo for
the opening ceremony.
It
was grand occasion where the participants had team photos before
a short march past prior to a delightful dinner.
All
the team members were introduced during the ceremony by each
accompanying manager.
Defending champions Antigua & Barbuda returned the trophy and
pledged that the silver ware will be returned to its rightful
place in the Caribbean.
“We
were given the charge by none other than Sir Vivian Richards,”
said manager of the Antigua & Barbuda team, Whitfield “Hashie”
Joshua.
“Don’t come back home without the title,” Joshua claimed was the
message from the former West Indian captain.
The
notion that Antigua & Barbuda would retain the title was met
with a type of ‘mockery’ by all other participating teams.
It
was interesting that all the managers made claim to the title.
That
the Antiguans could not return empty-handed, manager of the
South African team suggested that with vacancies in the South
African Police force, the Antiguans should start applying for
jobs immediately.
The
trophy he suggested was staying in
South Africa.
With
all the countries laying claim on the title it made way for an
extremely competitive tournament.
Just
five teams in a world tournament was a cause of concern but with
the intensity amongst the teams the stage was set for an intense
tournament.
During dinner the players and well wishers were treated to some
African entertainment including dance and song.
Dinner was exceptionally scrumptious during which time
motivational speaker, E.Simons, former Proteas coach encouraged
the players to “raise the standard of their game.”
Captain (Rev) C. Horn gave the opening Devotion before the
welcoming address by Provisional Commissioner,
Western
Cape M.
Petros.
Divisional Commissioner J.K Phahlane was the featured speaker at
the function, which also showcased music and dance by the Moyo
Traditional Group.
All
the team members were introduced during the ceremony and the
evening ended with song and dance.
Six for Antigua
By Ian “Magic” Hughes
Cape Town, South Africa-----Antigua & Barbuda took the first
title of three in the 2007 International Police Cricket
Festival.
The Antiguans left the Caribbean intent on retaining their world
title in the Police competition, they shared with South Africa
in 2004 after rained washed out final.
With the 45-over a-side starting tomorrow, the Antiguans secured
the six-a-side title following a thrilling and intense day of
cricket on Sunday.
Each of the five nations, Antigua & Barbuda, Bermuda, British
Virgin Islands, Western Australia and host South Africa featured
two teams in the six a-side competition.
At the end of the day it was the Antigua & Barbuda’s second team
that beat South Africa’s first team that won the title.
Spearheaded by player of the competition, national team opener
Kelvin Bowens the Antiguan team won by six runs to take the
title at the Van Der Stel Cricket Grounds.
Bowens had an unbeaten 21 to finish third in the standings on
the runs aggregates as Antigua & Barbuda, bating first posted 59
for two.
Egbert “Eggy” Francis who opened the innings with Bowens struck
13 as the two openers laid a solid foundation for their team.
Tariq “Tiger” Prince the top scorer in the competition hit a
well timed 14 to help his team to a good score while Jamie
“Spanish” Charles had 11 not out at the bottom of the order.
Chasing 60 for victory, the South Africans, helped by 17 extras
made a gallant effort before they were dismissed for 53.
The visitors who got to the finals with a dramatic win over
South Africa two in the semis looked destined to lose before
Oscar Ryan pulled off the catch of the tournament.
Ryan pulled a ball out of the air in what can only be describe
as a miraculous catch to dismiss opener B. Lemmetjies for 10
runs off the bowling of Charles.
After that it was all downhill for the South Africans.
C. Victor top scored for the home team with an unbeaten 11.
For the spectacular catch Ryan got the award for the best play
of the six-a-side competition.
Prince who had the most runs in an innings, 57 not out finished
the tournament with a ,total of 139 runs and was named batsman
of the competition.
Bowens who shared the most wickets, four, with South African P.
Beukes was named player of the tournament after he finished
third on the runs total with 100 total runs.
It was a relatively easy win in the finals for the Antiguans but
getting there took an impressive bowling performance by Charles.
Both Antigua & Barbuda featured their two teams in the semis
with the South Africa second team easily taking out the Antiguan
first team.
The Antiguan second team took out the South African second team
in dramatic fashion thanks to a spectacular final over from
Charles.
The South Africans needed just nine from the last over to book a
spot in the finals, which seemed like an easy task at hand.
Charles though had other ideas as he restricted the hosts to
nine runs and secure a spot for the Antiguans into the finals.
“I was not bowling well all day but in this game I knew that if
I did not improve on my bowling then w would be out of the
tournament,” Charles said later.
“I was very nervous.”
In the other semis the South Africans totally dominated the
Antiguan first team restricting Ivor “Tungu” Lawrence who had
hit an unbeaten 54, one of only two players to make half
centuries on the day to a duck.
The Antiguans with captain Bertel Baltimore Adam Sanford, Leroy
Frederick, James Cornelius and Klaus Lavia in the line up could
only muster 46 runs.
The South Africans reached their target without losing a wicket
with U. Ernesten and Victor hitting 19 and 18 runs respectively.
The Antiguans gave up 10 extras along the way.

rest of the teams in the competition it’s onto the 20/20
tournament and the big one, the 45-over a side competition with

favourites.

Wednesday 31 October 2007
Cape Town, South Africa---Defending champions Antigua &
Barbuda were in fine form as they crushed the British Virgin
Islands in the International Police Cricket Festival here in
Cape Town on Wednesday.
One day before Antigua & Barbuda’s 26th Independence, the
Antiguan Police showed no signs of missing the festivities at
home as they won convincingly by 118 runs, their second
successive triumph.
Anthony “I-Roots” Martin who joined the team on Monday after
arriving late showed why he was the ‘mystery man’ on the tour.
Martin will remember the Brakenfell Cricket Grounds where he
made his debut on the African continent.
With just his first ball of the tournament, Martin picked up the
wicket of S. Ramrarose to finish off the Virgin Islands.
Martin finished with figures of one over, one maiden, one wicket
and obviously no runs, an obvious impressive start to his South
African tour.
Chasing 204 for victory after Antigua & Barbuda staggered to 203
all out from 41.1 overs the Virgin Islands were dismissed for 85
after a good start at the target.
Former West Indies pacer Adam “Ice” Stanford was man of the
match after hitting a timely 33 at the lower order before
picking up three wickets for 20 runs from nine overs.
Sanford helped his team restrict the opposition who, led by Raiz
Alli with 23 at the top of the order made a brave attempt at
overcoming the target.
There were some anxious moments for the Antiguans as Alli had
his way with the opening bowers before Sanford took him out with
good delivery which he skied to Kelvin Bowens.
While Sanford had a good day with the ball, it was Egbert “Eggy”
Francis with four for 27 runs from nine overs who was the pick
of the bowlers.
Francis received the award for the bowler of the day.
It was another impressive performance by Francis who on Tuesday
had a good spell where he handcuffed the Bermudans who showed
the ability to hit over the top.
Earlier Antigua & Barbuda, sent in to bat after losing the toss
got off to a relatively fine start from openers Amwaa Prince and
Bowens.
The pair put on 49 runs before Bowens who seemed set for a huge
score simply gave his wicket away with a wayward shot off the
bowling of F. Davonish.
Bowens finished with 24 while Prince who also gave his wicket a
way following a good start ended his knock after he scored 28.
The Antiguan middle order crumbled under the tricky spin of
Davonish and D. Singh, both of whom finished with three wickets
each.
Davonish had three for 45 while Singh got three for 26.
Captain Baltimore top scored for Antigua & Barbuda with 34
before he was controversially run out.
The Antiguans struggled midway in the innings before a last
wicket stance of 45 by Sanford and Martin saw them through to
over 200 runs.
Bermuda who lost to Antigua & Barbuda on Tuesday got a
dramatic one-wicket win over Western Australia over at Norherns
Goodwood Cricket Club.
Carlton Jackson hit a timely 71 as Bermuda chasing 196 for
victory reached their target with just one wicket to spare in
the 40th over.
That was despite a four wickets for 20 runs effort from W.
Stokes.
Along with Jackson, A Braithwaite and F. Thorne assisted with 27
and 24 runs respectively.
Anderson Cumberbatch who scored just four but picked up four
wickets in the Western Australian innings was named man of the
match.
As a batsman who can bowl, Cumberbatch cautioned his teammates
that “if I am taking your wickets then you must make my runs.”
When Western Australia batted, D. Snowball hit an impressive 73
to take the batsman of the match award.
Snowball decorated his innings with nine boundaries and two
sixes as the Aussies got to 196 for eight in their allotted 45
overs.
D. Holt contributed 22 not out at the bottom of the order but it
was not enough as the Bermudans got the well needed win.
Today, Bermuda will take on South Africa while the favourites
and defending champions Antigua & Barbuda will come up against
the Aussies.
The British Virgin Island will take a rest this time around.

Friday 02 November
Antigua & Barbuda lost by four wickets to South Africa in the
2007 International Police Cricket Championships at the Old
Mutual Cricket Grounds on Friday.
South Africa won the toss and inserted the visitors, a move that
the Antiguans relished.
There must have been something that the home team knew however
that the visitors did not understand because after a solid start
the defending champions simply capitulated.
After scoring 241 on Independence Day against Western Australia
the Antiguans were dismissed for a mere 139.
Openers Kelvin Bowen and Sean Walsh took the score to 74 before
Bowen than on 34 lost his wicket
Erentsen got the breakthrough for the South Africans after
beating the bat three consecutive times.
After that it was all down hill for the Antiguans.
Four players went without scoring.
First, captain Bertel Baltimore was run out for a duck before
Anthony “I-roots” Martin, Egbert “Eggy” Framcis and Kleus Lavia
all lost their wickets without scoring.
Despite a gallant effort from Glenroy Weeks and Jamie Charles,
16 and 18 runs respectively the Antiguans crumbled under the
South Africans bowling.
C. Victor was the pick of the home team’s bowlers with four
wickets for just 17 runs from just 4.4 overs.
The Antiguans batted for just 38 overs.
B. Lemmetjies and Erentsen shared two wickets each giving up 13
and 35 runs respectively.
The South African chase started very shakily after Adam
Sanford got the wicket of opener V. Jantjies, who gave up his
helmet for a cap after facing two balls from the former West
Indies pacer.
The following over Jantjies’ fell for the trap after Sanford
tempted him into the hook shot and had min caught on the
boundary.
After that the visitors basically handed the home team the match
with four dropped catches before a 100 runs was up on the board.
It was a nervous chase by the South Aricans but the the home
team took advantage of the Antiguans poor work in the field to
wrap up the game despite losing six wickets.
Sanford and Francis finished with two wickets a piece.
The Antiguans have only themselves to blame but the good
thing about it is that they will have another chance at the home
team if they can get to the finals.
Who the Antiguans will play in the semis is still undecided
despite the British Virgin Islands’ win by one wicket over
Western Australia at Florida Park.
Chasing 169 for victory after Western Australia posted 168 for
six the British Virgin Islands got to its target in the 40th
over, losing nine wickets along the way.
For Western Australia opener W. Stokes who batted not out the
previous day against Antigua & Barbuda, was again unbeaten
batting through the innings for a well played 47.
P. Dawson and D. Snowball finished with 54 and 27 runs
respectively.
Man of the match, R. Noel grabbed four wickets for 19 runs for
the British Virgin Islands.
C. Leach hit 74, decorated with six boundaries to lead the
Virgin Islands to its first win of the competition.
D. Singh with 43, R. Alli 30 and K. Carter 20 got the British
Virgin Islands to good start before Noel with 48 and K. Jordon
16 not out contributed at the bottom of the order to see the
Islanders to victory.
S. Saxon was the key bowler for Western Australia with three
wickets for 32 runs in a losing cause.

Report Sunday 04 November 2007
After beating defending champions Antigua & Barbuda on
Friday, hosts South Africa cruised past Western Australia in the
2007 International Police Cricket Festival on Sunday.
The South Africans remained unbeaten through the preliminary
stages and they will take the number one spot into the semis.
They will play British Virgin Islands who lost to Bermuda by
seven wickets at the Old Mutual Cricket Field also on Sunday.
Man of the match, pacer J.Erentzen with three wickets for just
15 runs had Western Australia on the defensive all day.
The visitors, asked to bat by the home team batted for just 35
overs before they were dismissed for a mere 127 runs.
L. Fieldman top scored for Western Australia with 46 including
three fours while Wayne Unbeaten” Stokes, the man who has defied
most of the other teams’ bowlers added 23 at the top of the
order.
This time though, following two unbeaten innings against Antigua
& Barbuda and BVI, Stokes lost his wicket.
The rest of the Western Australia batters never really handled
the pace of man of the match or the rest of the South African
bowlers.
B. Lemmetjies and C. Victor picked up two wickets a piece
bowling for the home team.
The South Africans’ reply was swift, fast and in a hurry as they
raced to 128 for three in just 24.3 overs.
L. Kruger top scored with 37 not out as well as Victor who
followed up his two wickets with an unbeaten 25.
V. Jantjies and R. Swart chipped in with 17 and 22 runs in that
order.
S. Saxton was the pick of the WA bowlers picking up three
wickets for 52 runs off eight overs .
South Africa will take its unbeaten streak into the 20/20
competition prior to the start of the semis on Thursday, where
they will face BVI.
In the other game of the day, British Virgin Islands took on
Bermuda to decide on third and fourth spots in the semis.
In that game man of the match Dennis Archer took all the awards
with the highest score in the 45 over competition to date as
well as picking up three wickets for 29 runs with the ball.
The BVI won the toss and decided to bat first in overcast
conditions.
They reached 181 for nine in their allotted 45 overs with C.
Leach top scoring with 34 off 59 deliveries decorated with five
boundaries.
Kartick hit 25 and C. Armstrong added 23.
Bermuda started the chase in a rather nervous fashion and
battled to fend off the pace of Earl Prescott who removed both
openers very cheaply. Unfortunately dropped catches cost BVI the
match. Had they taken these the result could quite easily have
gone the other way. Archer showed just how classy a player he
was as he steadied the ship after the early setback and saw the
Bermudans through to a well deserved victory.
His 85 unbeaten runs came off just 77 deliveries creamed with
eight boundaries and two sixes.
Archer had good support from F. Thorne, 40 not out and 22 from
A. Braithwaite while th

Tues 06 November Report on 20/20
tournament and all the results
It’s the final day of the 20/20 competition. The weather is
clear and we enjoy a wonderful day’s cricket. The two big guns
of the festival, SA and Antigua are expected to meet in the
final. However after a surprises win by WA over South Africa,
it’s the Western Australians who meet SA in the final. And what
a final this is. The organisers could not have wished for a
better climax to an exciting day’s cricket.
WA bat first and amass 162 off their 20 overs thanks to a
magnificent display of clean hitting by the big quick bowler
Luke Feldman. Luke smashes 95 in 41 ball of which 44 is scored
in boundaries. Luke is ably supported by Caruso with 22 and
Tomlinson who scores 24. Best bowlers for SA are van Zyl and
Lemmetjies who weigh in with a wicket a piece.
The South African cause suffers a early setback when they
lose wickets at regular intervals. With 6 overs to go the asking
rate is around 10 to the over and this is maintained until the
19 over where an excellent spell of bowling pegs them back. At
the beginning of the last over the South African’s require a big
over from their batters but this is not to be as they lose
wickets instead.
The hero of the day is undoubtedly Luke Feldman. His innings
set the platform for the WA win. He regularly cleared the sight
screens with the biggest hit clearing the sight screen, the wall
of the stadium and landing in the main road.
With the semi finals being played on Thursday as follows, SA
vs BVI at Brackenfell and Antigua vs Bermuda at Durbanville, it
looks like we are in for some exciting cricket. Antigua having
won the 6 a side, WA the 20/20, will we see SA, Bermuda or
perhaps BVI taking the 45 over a side title?

Thursday 08 November - Semi-final day
Wednesday is a deserved rest day for all teams so it’s off in
various directions to enjoy shopping, the beach and other
excursions.
Thursday sees the start of the 2 semi finals in the main
competition. The BVI take on South Africa at Brackenfell while
Antigua play Bermuda at Durbanville.
The BVI bat first and struggle throughout their innings against
the tight SA bowling attack. Apart from K Jordan who top scores
with 28 not out and receives support from D Singh who scores 20,
the rest of the batters fall for very little with the end result
being SA need to score 114 to win the match in 45 overs. This is
never going to be enough against the powerful SA batting line up
and SA pass the total after 20.4 over with only 2 wickets down.
Top scorers for SA are Shaun Fourie 33, V Jantjies 27 and L
Kruger 16 not out. S Rambarose takes 1 for 22 for the BVI.
The match at Durbanville starts late due to a damp pitch
affected by overnight rain. After a false start the umpires
decide to call the players of and allow the pitch some time to
dry in the sun. Eventually after lunch, play is resumed with
Antigua and Barbuda batting first and posting a very respectable
score of 192 for 8 on a difficult batting wicket. Top scorers
are B Baltimore with a well played 58, K Bowens is once again in
the runs with 47.
The game as a contest is soon over very shortly after the start
of the Bermuda innings. The powerful bowling attack of Antigua &
Barbuda quickly tears through the Bermuda line up on what can
best be described as a bowers paradise. Bermuda are quickly
roled over for 68 with only Michael Thomas putting up any
resistance with 14. Result, Antigua & Barbuda win by 124 runs.

We wake to heavy showers over Cape Town hoping that somehow
it’s not raining down the road in Newlands. Unfortunately it is
and the start of the game is delayed due to a wet outfield. By
lunch there is still no play and the game is eventually called
off by the curator, taking into consideration that the ICC
ground inspection panel is expected at Newlands on Monday to
assess the ground prior to the Test match against New Zealand.
Obviously this is hugely disappointing for all involved in the
tournament. After a meeting by the technical committee the SAPS
team is declared the official winners by virtue of the fact that
they topped the table in the Round Robben play offs.
The prize giving takes place at the Simons Town Naval base. This
is a lavish affair with good food and music. Craig Mathews, the
ex SA ODI and Test player entertains us with stories from his
playing days before the main presentation.
Prize winners are as follows:
Main event (40 over a side): South Africa
6 a side: Antigua & Barbuda
20/20 festival: Western Australia
Best Batter: Kelvin Bowens (Antigua)
Best bowler: Adam Stanford (Antigua)
Best Fielder: Paul Caruso (Western
Australia)
Player of the tournament: Kelvin Bowens (Antigua)
From my side, it’s always wonderful to meet people involved
in sport from different part of the world. Thanks to all who
made the effort to come over and participate. It was your
wonderfully positive attitude that made the 2 weeks something
really special. As you would have discovered, the tip of Africa
is a wonderful place to live. We hope to see you all over this
way again in the not too distant future and when you do come
over please get in touch.
A big thank you to the SAPS, for allowing SA Sports Tours the
opportunity to get involved in this event and contribute to its
success. Thank you also needs to go to the following people:
• To all on the LOC who worked tirelessly on
their individual tasks to make things happen.
• Maryke who was the glue that kept things together.
• Derrick and his office.
• Snr Sup Willem who headed up the LOC
• Snr Sup Evan Corbette for his support throughout.
• The technical committee who were always on top of things.
• The drivers and PR who took really good care of all the teams.
